Some very foggy conditions on the drive up the Freeway to Nairne for the first round of the Cyclo Sportif series threw a few doubts in to the minds of riders already questioning what the course at Nairne was going to bring.
The fog was thick but had cleared before the turn off to Littlehampton and Nairne. The Central Districts Cycling Club decided to run the first cyclo at Nairne at the last minute as the favoured, and very much flatter course at Angle Vale was not available due to some bridge repair works.
11 teams assembled to combat the 18.1km course in what turned out to be ideal conditions with virtually no breeze and under blue skies. The Extra Hot Skinny Latte team had some dramas on the start line with a mechanical that was quickly rectified and were able to get away with a full team.
Being so early in the season there were some very good times recorded for the challenging but picturesque course.
In the two lap category both CDCC Mishmash and the Baby chinos put in a solid effort to complete course with many new riders in this category. Although the faces were showing plenty of pain there were also plenty of cheers as they crossed the finish line. Seven teams rode 3 laps of the course with all the teams putting in extremely good efforts. The teams of SADB1 and iEducate took on the challenge of riding 4 laps and did so at a very good pace. Both teams were evenly matched and were only separated by a few seconds on each lap, and even recorded the same time for their second laps. Well done to both teams.
Feedback has been provided, and noted, in relation to the difficulty of the course and the rough road conditions.
A number of new riders to the Cyclo Sportif series were identified, which was pleasing to see, and all appeared to enjoy the experience. There was plenty of food and drinks available for all the riders afterwards.
Well done to all teams for being so organized and making this a fun day for all involved.
The next Cyclo Sportif is being run by the Kilkenny Cycling Club. Please keep an eye on the CSA website for more details.
The Central Districts Cycling Club will be running their next Cyclo Sportif on the 21st of February 2016 and will more than likely be held at the fast and flat Angle Vale course (TBC).
We hope everyone enjoyed the day and we hope to see you all on your bikes for the remainder of the season.
